Silphium laciniatum
Compass plant is so named because its leaves follow the sun. Its seed provides an excellent source of fat and protein for birds, and its large sunny flowers serve assorted pollinators. This species prefers dry sunny locations. It's height, color and interesting deeply divided leaves make it an outstanding statement plant.
Serves long-tongued bees primarily, including honeybees, bumblebees, Carpenter bees, Cuckoo bees, Miner bees, and large Leaf-Cutting bees.
