Deschampsia cespitosa

Tufted hairgrass is a lovely clump-forming native grass. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich soils.

•Habitat: mesic to dry prairie and savannas

•Perennial

•Family: Graminoid

•Sun/Shade: prefers full-sun to part-shade

•Pollinator service: Supports Skipper butterfly caterpillars and granivorous songbirds.

 

NOTES:

Provides textural interest and over-wintering bird habitat. Grasses serve as important pupating habitat for many butterfly species.
