Hydrangea arborescens
Smooth or Wild Hydrangea
A gorgeous species, nearly identical to non-native and hybrid hydrangea, with large white or occasionally pale blue flowers. Somewhat woody in the south, more herbaceous in the north.
Attracts birds, butterflies, bumblebees . . . and attention.
Care: Water more often during prolonged heat and dry spells. Pruning: This hydrangea type blooms on the current season's growth. Smooth hydrangea pruning should be minimal to allow plants to retain their natural shape and size. In early spring, remove any dead, diseased or broken branches and lightly shape plants as needed.
